Dr. Thomas Lovejoy
An older white man sits on a table while posed against a dark gray background. He has a serious expression. One hand is raised, his fingers spread. While his mouth is closed, he appears to be mid-speech and making a point while gesturing. His other hand rests on his leg. He wears a dark suit, blue shirt, multi-colored bowtie, and glasses.

Artist Statement

Working at the Smithsonian gives us the chance to meet extraordinary people. Dr. Tom Lovejoy is an NZP Board Member and captivating storyteller. He was very generous to sit for a portrait in my dining room, which I convert into a studio. He is smiling at the camera in all the other pictures, but I made this portrait while he was sharing a story and lifted his hand, making for a great composition.

Dr. Thomas Lovejoy, one of the forefathers of Conservation Biology, is an icon and represents Smithsonian excellence in using science to solve nature's challenges.
