Roofline of an Asia building in black and white
In this black and white image, the dramatic ornamental designs on the roof swoop up to points that rise up at the edges of the building. The hazy clouds in the sky highlight the precise line of the architecture. Animal statues on the eave seemingly march across the roofline.

Artist Statement

While traveling in Seoul, South Korea I was in awe of the confluence of historical and modern architecture that sat harmoniously with nature. I was also inspired by the history of Changdeokgung being rebuilt in 1610 after all palaces in Seoul were burnt down during a 1592 invasion. Feeling the balance of the pungsu principles upon which the palace was built, I captured this image to remind me of the importance of integration and resilience.

Changdeokgung Palace, situated at the foot of a Seoul mountain range, features tiled hipped roofs with a corbelled multi-bracket system and ornamental carvings and painting.
