Crowd in a street in Japan
A crowd of people fills the street—there are no empty spaces. It is night, and the electronic signs that line the street are lit up in yellow, blue, and white. The white glow of streetlights dot the background. One man in a black shirt and glasses seems to look directly at the camera.

Artist Statement

This is the kind of photo you become aware of only after seeing it on your computer. I did not plan to take it or even be in the crowd. Despite having other, perhaps better planned and prettier photos, this one feels special. Maybe it is because it reminds me of wonderful Japan or because it shows the unconventional side of Japanese people. Or maybe it is just a friendly face in the crowd…

As busy as it gets during the Tokyo’ biggest firework festival – Sumidagawa. The camera captures a calm face in the hustle.
