Artist Statement
Abyssinia Market & Coffee Shop is around the corner from my home and I walk past it often during my daily "COVID-walks". Just after reopening, a customer spat on the owner, then vandalized the shop because he was asked to wear a mask - so the shop closed again. It was encouraging to see the notes taped on the front door and it gave me hope and optimism that we can stand together as a community.
Local Alexandria neighborhood shows overwhelming support to encourage a local, woman-owned business to reopen after experiencing harassment for asking a customer to wear a mask.
